What is Transesophageal Echocardiography?
TOE is a specialized examination in which a thin probe (endoscope) is inserted through the mouth into the esophagus. Because the esophagus is very close to the heart, exceptional image resolution is achieved, especially for posterior structures.
Superior image quality compared to transthoracic
Detailed valve and atrial septum assessment
Small thrombi and lesion detection

Why TOE with GE Vivid E95 Makes the Difference
The advanced transesophageal probe of the GE Vivid E95 provides images of the highest resolution. Because the oesophagus lies less than 1 cm from the left atrium, there is no interference from lungs, ribs or subcutaneous fat — problems that hinder transthoracic examination in obese patients or those with chronic lung disease.
3D transesophageal imaging with the GE Vivid E95 provides real-time three-dimensional valve anatomy, essential for surgical planning of valve repair. For patients with atrial fibrillation, TOE is the only reliable method to exclude thrombus in the left atrial appendage before cardioversion — a critical stroke-prevention step that saves lives.
The examination is performed at our clinic under local pharyngeal anaesthesia, in a safe environment with full medical monitoring. D. Boukis holds an EACVI specialisation in cardiac imaging, ensuring reliable analysis of even the most subtle findings.
When is TOE needed?
Thrombus Detection
Before atrial fibrillation cardioversion
Valve Assessment
Detailed mitral evaluation
Endocarditis
Valve infection investigation
Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO)
Atrial septum check
Preoperative Assessment
Before valve surgery
Aortic Dissection
Aortic check
How is TOE performed?
Preparation
The patient must fast for 6 hours before the examination.
1. Local Anesthesia
Local anesthesia is administered to the pharynx for patient comfort.
2. Endoscope Insertion
The special endoscopic probe is inserted through the mouth into the esophagus.
3. Imaging
Detailed heart images are acquired with high resolution.
Duration
15-20 minutes
